This apple pie recipe is truly the stuff of legends. I’m telling you, once you take a bite of this delicious pie, you’ll never want to eat any other apple pie again! It’s the kind of dessert that will make you want to slap your mama, it’s so good.
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
- 8 cups apples, peeled and sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 to 2 tbsp coarse sugar
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and sugar. Add in cold butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add in ice water, a few tablespoons at a time, until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two equal parts, shape into balls, and flatten into discs. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour or until well chilled.
- Preheat oven to 400F. Roll out one of the discs of dough and line a 9-inch pie dish with it. Trim off any excess dough.
- In a separate large mixing bowl, combine apple slices, flour, both sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Mix well and then transfer the apple mixture into the prepared pie dish. Cut butter into small cubes and scatter over the top of the apple mixture.
- Roll out the second disc of dough and cut into strips to make a lattice top. Brush the beaten egg over the top of the pie and then sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake the pie for 20 minutes and then reduce the oven temperature to 375F. Bake for an additional 40 to 50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Cool the pie on a wire rack before serving. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
Trust me when I say that this recipe will be a crowd-pleaser no matter what the occasion! The crust is perfectly flaky and the filling is sweet and spiced with just the right amount of tanginess from the lemon juice. Plus, who doesn’t love a good lattice top?
