As soon as the leaves start changing color and the nights get cooler, I know it’s time for my favorite dessert of all time: apple pie. It’s like a warm hug in pie form. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good slice of apple pie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream? Nobody, that’s who.

So, I went on a little internet adventure to find the best apple pie recipe out there. And boy, did I find some doozies. First up, we have a recipe from Taste of Home. The recipe claims to be the “best ever,” but I’ll be the judge of that.

Taste of Home’s Best Ever Apple Pie Recipe

Taste of Home's Best Ever Apple Pie

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 6 to 7 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large egg white
  • Additional sugar

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine sugars, flour and spices; set aside. In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice and vanilla. Add sugar mixture; toss to coat.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll one half of dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle; transfer to a 9-in. pie plate. Trim even with rim. Add filling; dot with butter. Roll remaining dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle. Place over filling. Trim, seal and flute edge. Cut slits in top. Beat egg white until foamy; brush over crust. Sprinkle with sugar.
  3. Bake at 375° for 45-50 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Cool on a wire rack.

This recipe seems pretty standard, but I’m willing to give it a try. Next up, we have a recipe from a website called How Sweet Eats. This one caught my eye because it’s a salted caramel apple pie. Yep, you read that right.

Salted Caramel Apple Pie Recipe from How Sweet Eats

Salted Caramel Apple Pie

Ingredients:

  • 1 Homemade Pie Crust
  • 5-6 cups thinly sliced apples (about 6-7 medium apples, peeled)
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar

Directions:

  1. Prepare the pie crust according to the recipe instructions.
  2. In a large bowl, toss together the sliced apples, flour, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, sugar, and caramel sauce. Make sure the apples are well coated.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared crust, making sure it’s packed in tightly. Dot the top of the apple mixture with the pieces of butter.
  4. Roll out the second pie crust and cut it into strips. Create a lattice pattern on top of the apples with the pie crust strips.
  5. Brush the lattice and edges of the pie with the beaten egg, then sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  6. Bake the pie at 375 degrees for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Let the pie cool for at least an hour before slicing and serving. Top with additional caramel sauce and sea salt, if desired.

This recipe sounds a little more adventurous than the first, but hey, I’m always up for a challenge. Now, the hardest part will be deciding which recipe to try. But who said I could only make one apple pie this season? Happy baking, friends!
