Upma is a popular breakfast dish from South India made with semolina or suji. It is easy to make and can be flavored with various vegetables and spices. Here’s how you can make this flavorful dish:

Upma Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup semolina (suji)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 6-7 curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water

Instructions:

  1. In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they start spluttering, add cumin seeds and curry leaves.
  2. Add onion and green chili and saute until onion turns translucent.
  3. Add tomato and saute until it turns soft and mushy.
  4. Then add turmeric powder and mix well.
  5. Add semolina and roast it until it turns light brown and gives a nutty aroma.
  6. Add salt and water and mix well. Cover the pan and let it cook on medium flame for 2 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the semolina is cooked.
  7. Serve hot with coconut chutney or pickle.
