Paula Deen’s Iron Skillet Apple Pie Recipe

Iron Skillet Apple Pie

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 6 to 7 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (6 to 7 medium apples)
  • 1 box refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box
  • 1 egg white, beaten
  • Sugar, if desired

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Melt butter in a 10-inch cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add white sugar, brown sugar, water, cinnamon and nutmeg, and stir well. Mix in the sliced apples and cook until the apples are tender and the sugar mixture has thickened.
  3. Unroll pie crusts and place one in the skillet over the apple mixture. Brush the crust with egg white. Use a sharp knife to cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. Sprinkle sugar over the top if desired.
  4. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Cool the pie for at least 15 minutes before serving.

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Roll out one of the pie crusts and place it in a 9-inch pie dish. Set aside.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add flour, stir and cook for 1 minute. Add water, white sugar, brown sugar, sliced apples, cinnamon and nutmeg, and stir well. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust. Roll out the second pie crust and place it on top of the apples. Trim the edges and seal the crusts together by crimping with a fork.
  5. Use a sharp knife to cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Cool the pie for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Both of these apple pie recipes are delicious and easy to make. Whether you’re using an iron skillet or a 9-inch pie dish, you’re sure to have a crowd-pleaser on your hands. Don’t forget to serve your pie with a side of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra sweet treat. Enjoy!
